I wear two hats: the first is as a freelance filmmaker and editor, working in the areas of documentary and short film / video. The second is as a web developer, designing and building crisp, clear, standards-based websites for a wide range of corporate clients. Increasingly, my two hats are becoming one, as more and more video content is delivered and consumed via the web, and I find myself ideally positioned to offer advice, expertise and understanding across both disciplines. The first of three vignettes I shot recently for the Dubai-based Al Arabiya satellite news channel. These are 5- to 8-minute culture/travelogue pieces hosted by Laith Bazari, who is well known to audiences in the Arab world. We shot all three vignettes over a very tight 3 days in January 2010. I've been designing websites since the 1990s. I specialise in crisp, clear, standards-based websites that are easy to navigate, have a strong brand presence, and communicate clearly with customers. I now develop most of my sites on ExpressionEngine, a powerful, flexible web publishing platform that allows anyone to maintain and update a website easily and painlessly.
MPA Library: This started out as a database challenge: how to archive and catalogue a wide variety of media assets (press releases, photos, videos, powerpoints), and make them available to MPA personnel in offices all across Asia. After trying a range of standalone database solutions, including Filemaker, it was clear a secure web server-based solution was the way to go. ExpressionEngine provided the answer: I was able to develop a flexible, secure, and easy to manage site that allows MPA personnel to search, sort, display and download from thousands of assets and media types. Personnel tasked with adding assets to the site also enjoy an easy-to-use Control Panel interface that is accessed securely through any modern web browser. (Sorry, this site is member access only).
My main interest lies in a blend of interactive, generative media art and experimental film. I'm also rediscovering photography after a long absence!

HandHeld was a piece made in 2005 as part of my Masters thesis. It explored the narrative possibilities of video on hand-held devices (long before the iPhone). I built a custom viewing device that used two 7-inch LCD panels and a motion sensor. Software combined motion data with video clips and real-time-generated elements to affect and modify playback as the device was moved by the viewer. The work was shown in a number of exhibitions, including the Microwave Media Arts Festival.
I was in Taiwan recently for a couple of days on business, when I had a spare evening with nothing to do except watch the UK election results over the Internet in my room (exciting at first actually, but then got really dull!!) So I picked up my Canon 7D, a couple of lenses and a tripod and hit the streets.

I recently worked with Laith Bazari of Al Arabiya, a satellite news channel in Dubai that broadcasts right across the Middle East and Arab world. Laith was in Hong Kong to shoot three 5- to 8-minute vignettes on different aspects of HK life and culture — part of an ongoing series he’s been doing around the world for Al Arabiya. Nick Foxall is a Hong Kong-based freelance filmmaker / DoP, web developer and media artist.
In film, Nick focuses on the fields of short film, documentary, and experimental video. His 2004 documentary “Adventure Under Sail”, a profile of ocean adventurer Marc Cuthbert, won First Prize at the 2005 Beijing International Student Film Festival. He has shot freelance work for numerous clients, including the British Consulate (Hong Kong), the Motion Picture Association, FTV Future TeleVision, Al Arabiya News Channel, and AVH Live (a division of Ogilvy).
In website development, Nick has been designing and building websites since the mid-1990s. In recent years, Nick’s web work has grown alongside the transition to standards-based, “Web 2.0” sites. He is fully conversant with the latest CSS, XHTML and emerging HTML 5 standards, designing super-crisp sites that focus on usability and customer interactivity. Since 2008, Nick has been building sites on ExpressionEngine, an advanced, highly flexible, yet easy to use web publishing platform. Clients are able to update and manage their website, customer data, mailing lists, forum and many other functions through a simple, browser-accessed Control Panel.
Nick’s media art has been seen in a number of exhibitions, including the Microwave International Media Arts Festival. His work in this area focusses on interactive, generative media and experimental film. Nick holds an MFA in Media Design and Technology from the School of Creative Media, City University of Hong Kong.
