After the enormous success of Tycoon Talk in 2014, TVB came back and commissioned a second series. Named Tycoon Talk & the Next Generation, this series profiled eight younger, up-and-coming business people and tycoons in Hong Kong, including a few women entrepreneurs.
For this series, also hosted by Sean Lee-Davies and produced by Activis Media, Nick was again Director of Photography on most of the major shoots, plus Senior Editor, and – for the first time – Scriptwriter for all eight episodes.
Taking on the role of scriptwriter was a daunting challenge. Even though the shows are essentially a compilation of interviews, there still needs to be a narrative thread, and each show needs to communicate the essence of the person being profiled. Introductions, setups and voice-overs all have to be scripted, and everything written to fit a narrative arc that covers just 23 minutes.
Most of the episodes were shot in one day – that’s one day to capture all interviews, and all b-roll, often at two or three locations.
Greater use of drone footage in many of the episodes also helped lift production values for this second series, giving the show a more dynamic and cinematic feel, with spectacular angles that wouldn’t have been feasible before.
Tycoon Talk and the Next Generation was broadcast in Hong Kong between September and November, 2015. Again, ratings have been good, and the series has been well received.
